Boost Your Home’s Energy Efficiency With Duct Sealing

Boost Your Home's Energy Efficiency With Duct SealingEvery component of your HVAC system should be considered when trying to maximize you renergy efficiency. Ductwork is an important component that frequently gets overlooked. According to experts, it’s common for older homes to have leaky ducts that are undermining the efficiency of the HVAC system by about 20 percent. If your home suffers from leaky ductwork, duct sealing is a relatively easy and cost-effective way to boost your HVAC system’s efficiency.

Here are a few symptoms that may indicate you have leaky ducts:

  • Some areas are challenging to heat and cool.
  • In some areas, the air seems stagnant and uncomfortable.
  • Your ductwork runs through an attic, crawl space or garage.
  • There are visibly damaged or kinked ducts.
  • Your summer energy bills are inappropriately high.

The first step to duct sealing is to examine the ductwork you can access for any gaps, holes or poor connections. These should be sealed with a quality mastic, metal tape or mastic sealant. This is especially important for ductwork that runs through unconditioned spaces like an attic or garage. Leaks in those areas would be complete losses, whereas leaks in conditioned areas are at least contained in the insulated interior of the house. Additionally, leaks in unconditioned areas can allow pollutants in that may be present in those spaces, such as insulation particles and chemical fumes.

If you still suspect there are inefficiencies in your ductwork or want to be sure it is operating as efficiently as possible, it’s best to call a professional. They can inspect and seal the ductwork in areas you’re unable to access. They can also perform additional tests to make sure your ductwork doesn’t have any other inefficiencies, such as unbalanced supply and return flow, or backdrafting.
