Save Money, Be Comfy With These Basic Energy Saving Tips

Save Money, Be Comfy With These Basic Energy Saving TipsWhen you make an effort to lower your energy usage, the benefits are two-fold: you get to enjoy the financial benefits reflected on your monthly utility bill and you can relish in the fact that you’re contributing to saving the environment. There are many energy saving tips out there and we’ve put together a list of some of our favorites:

  • Listen to your mother about those lights — Yes, your mom was right. When you leave a room, make sure that you’ve turned the lights off in order to conserve energy.
  • Switch out the lights — To be even more effective, switch out your traditional bulbs with newer, more efficient models whenever possible.
  • Correct sizing — To lower your energy usage when heating or cooling your home, make sure that the unit has been correctly sized. This is especially a problem if you’ve sized it too small, as it will work tirelessly to condition your home with little effect.
  • Utilize surge protectors — Even when electronic devices like TVs, Blu-ray players, and cell phone chargers are turned off, they still use a small amount of energy. To cut off the power, connect them to a surge protector and turn the entire thing off when not in use.
  • Install equipment with the Energy Star label — By only selecting models that are backed by Energy Star, you can be sure that your equipment is more energy-efficienct. For best results, consider choosing a model designated as Most Efficient.
  • Seal air leaks — Air leakage contributes to a huge amount of lost energy in most homes. If you want to tackle this problem head-on, hire an HVAC contractor to conduct a blower test and determine where your problem areas are located.
  • Shower, don’t bathe — Although taking a bath can be relaxing, it’s also a great way to waste water and energy. Lower your usage by switching to brief showers as much as possible.
