NATE’s Revised Exams: Keeping Your HVAC Tech on Top of His Game

NATE's Revised Exams: Keeping Your HVAC Tech on Top of His GameNATE is the acronym for North American Technician Excellence, the largest industry-endorsed organization to specialize in certifying heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians. NATE certification validates technicians’ general knowledge and their expertise in specialty areas, covering all aspects of both the domestic and commercial HVAC/R industries. To reflect marketplace advances, NATE has revised the examination process by which technicians earn certification. Fundamentals. For the first time since 1999, NATE’s twin Service and Installation exams have been combined to comprise a 75-question multi-disciplinary qualification, known as Core. This initiative was taken, according to NATE’s explanatory material, “to reflect changes in the HVAC/R industry as identified in NATE’s job analysis.”Along with Core, specialty tests are conducted in air conditioning, air distribution, heat pumps, gas furnaces, oil furnaces, hydronics and refrigeration.

NATE’s Revised Exams. The new exam was compiled by 70 experts in all relevant disciplines. The stringent development process was conducted by NATE’s committee members.

First, market research and job analysis were used to ensure the tests would indeed reflect the evolving industry. Next, test specifications were developed to create blueprints based on the study results. New exam questions were written as required, and thoroughly reviewed by experienced, hands-on techs working with industry employers and manufacturers, educators and trainers.

The new material was then assembled, reviewed, revised and beta tested. The passing point was established, analyzing Core and all the specialty exams to determine a realistic passing score. The new tests were then delivered to NATE’s testing organizations across the U.S. and Canada, at which point the old exams were retired.

Keeping Pace. The new examinations came online in 2013. Ongoing statistical reviews determine the validity of – or any needed changes in – each and every question, to ensure effective discrimination between candidates who know the answers, and those who do not.
