The R-22 Refrigerant Phaseout Is Underway -- Do You Know What That Means?If you have an air conditioning system that was installed before 2010, you have likely heard about the R-22 refrigerant phaseout. To meet the terms of the Montreal Protocol, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandated the gradual elimination of the refrigerant R-22 by 2020 because of its detrimental, depleting effect on the atmosphere’s ozone layer. Used in its place for the most part is R-410A, a more eco-friendly refrigerant formula. However, R-410A can only be used in newer air conditioning systems that are engineered for the higher pressure that R-410-A requires to work properly.
